Vanuatu speaker confirms 27 MPs have signed motion of no confidence

10:54 am on 18 February 2014

Vanuatu's Speaker of Parliament Philip Boedoro has confirmed a motion of no confidence in the Government of Prime Minister Moana Carcasses has been lodged with his office, and signed by 27 members of parliament.

The Opposition claims the motion was also signed by three State Ministers.

If the number is correct then the Government only has 24 members in the House.

Opposition sources say among the main reasons for the motion is the way in which the Vanuatu National Provident Fund invests its members' savings which seems to favour foreign interests instead of its members, the deteriorating health situation in the country and the increasing recruitment of foreigners to fill local posts in the Government.

Sources from within the Speaker's Office say he is likely to seek legal advice on the motion from the State Law Office, and if the motion is to be debated, Parliament will sit on Monday.
