Australia's Bishop meets with Fiji's PM

11:23 am on 15 February 2014

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop met with Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama in Suva on Friday.

Fiji Live online reports the meeting was seen as a welcomed development in efforts to mend relations between the two governments since the military coup in 2006.

The meeting was held behind closed doors under heavy guard.

Miss Bishop is in Fiji with the Pacific Island Forum's Ministerial Contact Group to meet Fiji leaders as part of a two-day visit ahead of the elections promised for September.

Julie Bishop later, along with fellow Forum Ministers, met with the Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum who briefed them on progress made ahead of the 2014 Elections.

The group will meet with political parties on Saturday before they return.
