Rugby league continues to go from strength to strength in the Niuean community.

The Island nation has two teams competing at Saturday's Cabramatta Nines tournament in Sydney, with a development team joining the national side.

And after playing their first rugby league international against Vanuatu last year,

plans are in place for a test against the Philippines in the first week of October.

Niue coach Brendan Perenara says the interest in the team has been growing.

"We're pretty excited about all of it - having two squads is going to be real good. We struggled for a few years - we were always getting players on the day or the night before - so pretty set up this year with two teams so hopefully we can get our stronger side, our national side, up there in the cup amongst the big fellas".

Brendan Perenara says Niue first connected with the Philippines at a previous Cabramatta tournament and they plan to use this year's event as a trial opportunity ahead of the test match.
