Public hearings will be held in the Northern Marianas over a proposal by the United States military to use the island of Pagan for military training.
The speaker of the House, Joseph Deleon Guerrero, says the public hearings would be held as part of committee discussion on a joint resolution asking the Governor Eloy Inos to oppose the plan.
The Saipan Tribune reports the joint resolution will be formally introduced on Friday.
One of the sponsors of the resolution, Roman Benavente, says Pagan is a pristine, beautiful island which should not be destroyed by military bombings.
The paper says if it is adopted by both the House and Senate, the joint resolution would become the CNMI legislature's unified voice against the militarization of Pagan.
The move comes as the governors of CNMI and Guam are in Hawaii at the invitation of the U.S. Pacific Command for a briefing on the military's plans in the region.
