The tropical depression heading for New Caledonia is expected to intensify into a category two cyclone within the next 12 hours.

The Fiji Metservice says Cyclone June is currently still a category one, and at 5 AM New Caledonia time, it was located about 90 kilometres to the south of Surprise Island.

The Fiji Met service says it expects gale force winds over parts of New Caledonia, and while it is expected to instensify within the next 12 hours, it is not expected to go beyond a Category 2 cyclone.

It says currently maximum sustained gusts are up to 74 kilometres an hour, but they could reach more than 90 kilometres.

The New Caledonian public have been advised to restrict their movement and not to go to sea.
