Fiji tuna industry no longer viable - company

Fiji Fish Marketing Group Limited says it would like an urgent meeting with the prime minister over the problems of the tuna fishing industry.

Its managing director, Graham Southwick, has told the website Fijivillage that not much has been done by officials since a meeting eight weeks ago when a plan was to be drawn up quickly to help save the tuna business.

Fiji Fish Marketing Group Limited has since ceased its tuna business and laid off about 120 employees.

Mr Southwick says there has been a massive decline in tuna catches in the last few years and the tuna industry is no longer sustainable.

He said they have lost millions in the last five years.
