Chinese investors in Tahiti expected to hire locals

French Polynesia's president, Gaston Flosse, says the massive investment deals lined up with Chinese companies provide for them to hire local workers.

Mr Flosse gave the clarification in an interview with local radio after announcing that up to two billion US dollars is expected to be invested to develop the Mahana Beach complex in Tahiti.

The area in Punaauia is to include luxury hotels, a casino, cinemas and an aquatic centre, with apartments to be sold to help fund the complex.

The projected sum of two billion US dollars is a multiple of the planned investment reported earlier.

According to Mr Flosse, the Chinese investors will send engineers but the labour force will be made up of locals.

The territory has unprecedented unemployment amid a decline in tourism over the past decade.
