Fiji group calls for Govt to speed up electoral appointments

2:44 pm on 7 January 2014

A Fiji lobby group, the Citizens Constitutional Forum, says the Government needs to speed up electoral appointments and install a caretaker Government if people are to have confidence in the election process.

The elections are promised for this September but the Electoral Commission and an election supervisor are yet to be appointed.

The chief executive of the forum, Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says people in Fiji have been ready for democracy for the last seven years and want free and fair elections.

"The Government appears unready for democracy though. The Government constitution 2013 is different from what we regard as the people's constitution, which was ditched by Government last year, their consititution does not allow for a transistional and independent administration for the period of elections."

Reverend Akuila Yabaki also says it is critical that media reporting is allowed to be unrestricted and balanced.
