PNG MP pushing power production in his Markham constituency

Papua New Guinea's housing and urbanisation minister, Paul Isikiel, is planning a major exercise to improve the power supply in his Markham electorate in Morobe province.

This follows the development and establishment of Umi Township, which will become the new Markham district head quarters and eventually a sub-regional centre for the Momase and Highlands' regions.

Mr Isikiel said Umi Township will require more power for domestic and industrial use but it is clear that PNG Power Ltd is struggling to meet demand in other places.

He says he wants to focus on environmentally friendly power producing options such hydro, wind and solar.

The Post Courier says the minister has now set up a team of experts comprised of academics from the University of Technology, economists, engineers and his own district administration.
