Samoa cabinet extends suspension of police commissioner and assistant

8:36 am on 24 December 2013

The Samoan Government has approved a one-month extension of the suspension of the Police Commissioner and an assistant police commissioner, until the end of January 2014.

Lilomaiava Fou Taiaoalo and Sala Seaga Uili Lafaele have been facing a Commission of Inquiry investigating allegations of abuse and misuse of power at Tafaigata prison.

The cabinet also extended the Commission of Inquiry's appointment to the same period to give it time to complete its report, due to the magnitude of evidence brought before it.

The extension comes after the four month period of suspension ended on Sunday.

One of the senior lawyers assisting the inquiry, Sine Lafaialii Koria, says members of the commission chaired by the Ombudsman, Maiava Iulai Toma, shall provide their report to cabinet for their perusal by the end of next month.

The current Acting police commissioner, Nafo'i Talaimanu Keti, will continue to hold the position until the new suspension period ends.
