PNG police say officers charging for services out of line

5:22 pm on 29 November 2013

Deputy Papua New Guinea police commissioner, Simon Kauba, says the police do not charge for services.

This comes after a formal complaint from a member of the public that she had been asked for a payment of more than a thousand US dollars after seeking police help with an eviction.

She later received an invoice for an additional one thousand dollars.

Mr Kauba says he will have the matter investigated and the policemen involved will have to find work elsewhere.

But Mr Kauba has also appealed to the public not to solicit police assistance outside of the police command structure.

He says if people have an issue then they need to approach police through the proper channels.
