Youth gather in Fiji for peacebuilding workshop

It's hoped that youth representatives from around the Pacific will be better equiped to assess conflict and use peace building tools to solve their differences following a workshop in Fiji.

The Pacific Centre for Peacebuilding is hosting a learning exchange for 10 young people from various youth councils in the Pacific in Suva today.

The Centre's research officer Menka Goundan, says through the exchange, the participants will be able to design future training and workshops to help young people in the Pacific.

She says the region has been affected by the rapid increase in influence of social media and the spread of western concepts while traditional peace building structures have faded away.

"That has been the challenge with young people is being influenced to use methods that are not ours, that are not Pacific in nature and then acting out of haste and reacting to situations which then lead to violence."

Menka Goundan says they are encouraging youth to use old peace building methods in conjunction with newer tools.
