Full reasons for Tonga civil suit jury dismissal to be revealed in January

Tonga's chief justice is to make public his reasons for dismissing the jury in a civil suit on January the 23rd.

The suit, brought by former attorney general, John Cauchi, ended suddenly on Tuesday after six days of testimony.

It is understood the chief justice Michael Scott accepted complaints from the plaintiff about his directions to the jury.

Mr Cauchi is suing the Tongan government for contract breaches after he resigned in 2010, less than a year into a projected three-year term.

Mr Cauchi is alleging he was forced to resign and wants damages of more than half a million US dollars.

The use of juries in civil trials is becoming increasingly rare in many parts of the world.
