French Polynesia's Tuheiava won't seek second French Senate term

French Polynesia's Richard Tuheiava has decided not to seek re-election to the French Senate next year.

Mr Tuheiava, who was elected five years ago, says he will stand in the municipal election in March in a bid to become the mayor of Arue.

He says should he be elected, he will resign from his Senate seat.

In 2008, he was at the age of 34 the youngest person to be elected to the French Senate.

The territory's other senator, Gaston Flosse, said last month that he wouldn't seek re-election.

Senators in Tahiti are chosen by a 700-strong electoral college, made up of assembly members, mayors and council members.
