The acting Insurance Commissioner in Papua New Guinea has been arrested and charged with one count of official corruption and one count of abuse of office under the Criminal Code Act by police.
Police allege Salamo Elema committed the offences between November 2012 and June.
The complainant, Peter Pena, who is a director of Melanesian Re Brokers Limited, alleged that during the period he had applied for a insurance brokering licence with the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
Mr Pena alleges that Mr Elema, as acting Insurance Commissioner, did not issue a licence and instead imposed non-existent statutory provisions of the Insurance Act 1995.
Mr Pena further alleges that Mr Elema wrote to him in December to spread his shares as a precondition to his company Melanesian Re Brokers being granted a license.
Police say other officers of the Office of the Insurance Commission, who were allegedly involved and implicated in the matter, will be arrested soon.
