The Fiji government official in charge of elections and political party registration has been given new powers over political parties.
The registrar of political parties can demand individuals or groups provide information necessary for the registrar to carry out the duties of the office.
The changes come in the Political Parties Amendment Number 2 Decree which was gazetted last month.
Companies, associations, NGOs and government departments are among those who would be required to provide information if asked.
There are fines of up to 270,000 US dollars or five years in prison for non-compliance.
Four political parties have so far registered in Fiji amid complaints the registration process is too restrictive.
