Forty one players have been selected as part of the American Samoa squad, from which a national team will be named for next year's international Rugby 7s tournament in Hong Kong.

The team made history by landing a berth at the Hong Kong Sevens by placing 5th at last month's Oceania 7s tournament in Fiji.

American Samoa's Rugby Union chairman Togiola Tulafono says training will start next week and from there 12 players will be picked early next year for the prestigious event in May.

The squad includes players from rugby clubs in Hawai'i, Alaska and Samoa.

Togiola wants to start training as early as possible to prepare for American Samoa's first appearance at the tournament.

The Union was officially admitted as a full member of the International Rugby board just last year.
