A suspended deputy secretary in Tonga's Ministry of Justice has been jailed for 10-months for causing the death of a passenger while he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Vatulele Tuputupu was jailed for 1-year and 10-months but Justice Charles Cato suspended the final year of the sentence for two-years, meaning he will serve only 10-months at Hu'atolitoli Prison.

He had been found guilty in a jury trial of causing the death of 'Ana Toki in a road accident at Lapaha in August 2011.

Matangi Tonga reports that Tuputupu was driving a government car at the time of the accident.
