Fiji police refuse to comment on latest military beating

2:40 pm on 1 November 2013

The Fiji police have refused to comment on the case of a man who claims he was beaten by Fiji military personnel last month.

Keni Finau says he lodged a complaint against a military officer in 2010 over a personal matter and says last month he was visited by a group of officers who asked him to accompany them to the military camp to discuss the issue.

Instead he says the men took him to Colo-i-Suva forest park where he was assaulted.

Mr Finau told Radio New Zealand International that the police had taken some men in for questioning and indicated that charges would be laid soon against the main suspect.

But the chief of operations, Rusiate Tudravu, says the police won't make any comments to international media.

The police media unit can't confirm if that's an ongoing policy.
