Australian Associated Press, or AAP, has closed its office in Papua New Guinea after 60 years presence.
The AAP editor in chief, Tony Gillies, says fast-changing times meant the newswire had to consider the best use of availiable resources.
He says the country's coverage will continue through a network of freelance reporters and photographers, and AAP staff will be on standby to go to PNG as news developments warrant.
Mr Gillies says it is a significant development, given the important role AAP has played in covering PNG for Australian audiences.
The bureau in the capital Port Moresby was set up as part of a network of Pacific correspondents in the mid-1950s.
