ACP says it is keeping a close eye on Fiji's domestic labour issues

The African, Caribeean and Pacific Group of States has welcomed the joint Fiji-European Union talks this week, and says it is supportive of Fiji's steps towards democracy.

The Assistant Secretary General of the ACP Achille Bassilekin says there have been positive signs from Fiji that it is moving towards a democracy.

The ACP Sugar Ministerial Group chairman Satya Faugoo earlier sung the praises of Fiji at the meetings this week, saying the constitution enshrines fundamental principles and rights.

Mr Bassilekin says he is keeping a close eye on Fiji's domestic reforms in the sugar industry and says there is nothing controversial, despite the ongoing dispute over pay and union members threatening to strike.

"This is an important issue on which the Government is certainly undertaking consultations and we will continue to monitor these domestic consultations."
