Vanuatu government warns pastors and resorts against gay marriage ceremonies

In Vanuatu, the Minister for Internal Affairs, Patrick Crowby, has warned all pastors throughout the country they are not allowed to preside over any gay or lesbian marriages.

He says such acts go against the constitution of Vanuatu, which is a Christian country.

The minister issued the warning after receiving a complaint from the Vanuatu Christian Council and the Presbyterian Church of Vanuatu saying a gay marriage had taken place at a resort in Port Vila.

Mr Crowby says he has ordered an investigation and if the report is true he would not hesitate to revoke the licence of the pastor and the church involved, as well as penalise the resort for allowing the ceremony to take place on its premises.
