A record haul of marijuana, possibly destined for the overseas market, has been found by Papua New Guinea police.
The newspaper, The National, reports that police in Kerema have confirmed that last weekend eleven bags containing 84.5 kilograms of the illicit drug were confiscated after they apprehended four suspects.
It was the biggest ever haul of marijuana in the country, according to the National Drug and Vice Squad, but a spokesperson says they were reluctant to give a street value for fear of encouraging further drug smuggling.
The officer-in-charge, Chief Inspector Joel Kapinias, says the four suspects were part of a group of 13 men who had smuggled the drug from Goroka to Kerema via Morobe.
The suspects are being detained at the Boroko police cells and are expected to appear before the Boroko District Court in Port Moresby.
