A senior police officer in Tonga has been charged with assault while he is on suspension for his alleged involvement in corruption.

Matangi Tonga reports the police commissioner Grant O'Fee as saying the assault charge is unrelated to the corruption investigation.

Mr O'Fee says he first suspended the officer on August the 22nd for two weeks without pay, and it was extended for another two weeks, during which the assault allegedly took place.
