Cooks MP George constrained as lawyer

6:04 am on 28 September 2013

A Cook Islands lawyer and MP, Norman George, has had his legal practice limited by a judge because of a series of complaints about his conduct as a lawyer.

The Chief Justice, Thomas Weston, says he wanted to express his considerable concern at Mr George's conduct and emphasise that the degree of censure is very high.

The complaints levelled against Mr George include making allegations of fraud not supported by evidence, allegations he has personally levelled against other law practitioners, and also issues with his personal and business tax matters.

Mr George is now barred from taking on cases in the land division of the Cook Islands Court for three years and appeals in the Court of Appeal for 18 months.

He has been given one week to cease representing clients in both categories.
