Vanuatu's health minister, Serge Vohor, has told donor partners he wants to rebuild a former French colonial facility that had been used to house mental health patients.

Mr Vohor, who worked as a health officer during the colonial period, says funding is being sought to rebuild the institution which closed its doors 40 years ago.

Mr Vohor says marijuana users could use such a facility to recover from their addictions.

Traditionally the elderly and sick in Vanuatu are care for by their own families.
