Former Tonga police officer jailed for stealing fuel intended for police car

A former Police Inspector and the Officer in Charge of the 'Eua Police Station in Tonga has been jailed for one-year, after he was convicted of taking fuel intended for the police vehicle for his own use.

Veimau Leone who appeared before the Chief Justice Michael Scott on Monday morning at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court received an 18-month sentence.

Matangi Tonga online reports the Chief Justice suspended the final six-months of Leone's sentence, leaving him one-year to serve at Hu'atolitoli Prison.

The accused was found guilty after a trial earlier this month before the Chief Justice in 'Ohonua, 'Eua and sentencing was diverted to Nuku'alofa.
