Samoa opposition MP concerned at trial delay

The Tautua Samoa party opposition MP, Levaopolo Talatonu, has raised concerns over the continuing delay of his trial before the district court because of what he describes as the slow process by the police and customs.

The MP is facing eight charges of fraud and false declaration under the Customs Act relating to the unlawful import by his shipping agent of five hundred cartons of whiskey in a container.

The case was heard on Monday but it has been adjourned for the fifth time now to November after the court accepted applications for the MPs case to be heard together with criminal charges against a woman employee of his shipping business.

Levaopolo says he hopes the matter will go ahead without another adjournment.

He is concerned his rights to a fair trial could be affected because he is defending himself without a lawyer.
