The development of three sugar cane access roads in Fiji have been approved to begin this year.

The European Union will fund the three projects, which will be carried out in the Drasa sector, Malolo sector and in Lautoka.

The Ministry of Sugar's permanent secretary, Lieutenant Colonel Manasa Vaniqi, says the three roads will begin sometime this year.

The agreement came about after sugar stakeholders and representatives of the European Union met in Lautoka this week, to discuss developing the sugar industry.

Mr Vaniqi says a lot of issues were resolved and ideas were discussed for the betterment of the industry.

Also part of the discussions were the preferential agreement between Fiji and the EU which comes into its final term in 2017, and other projects such as research done by the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji.
