Cooks opposition says George still CIP member

1:25 pm on 10 September 2013

The leader of the opposition Democratic Party in the Cook Islands, Wilkie Rasmussen, says there is no way that the MP Norman George can join the party at any time in the future.

Mr Rasmussen says his party will abide by the decision of the High Court that Mr George has not legitimately resigned from the Cook Islands Party and is therefore still a CIP MP.

He says the court has also said the anti-party hopping provisions of the Electoral Act that Mr George has challenged were not contrary to the constitution.

Therefore, he says, he cannot cross the floor and join the Democratic Party while he is still a CIP MP.
