A notorious Papua New Guinea cult leader and prisoner on the run, Steven Tari, also known as Black Jesus, has reportedly been killed in Madang province.

The Post Courier reports the provincial police commander, Chief Superintendent Sylvester Kalaut, as confirming that the high-risk prisoner was attacked and killed with one of his followers yesterday at the remote Gal village.

Tari, who was one of 49 prisoners who escaped from Beon jail in March, was allegedly killed by Gal locals after he murdered a woman and attempted to take the life of another.

He had been serving a long jail term for various crimes including rape and murder.

Tari gained notoriety as the self-styled Black Jesus who travelled through remote parts of PNG, gathering thousands of disciples until his arrest in 2007.

He is alleged to have eaten the flesh of some of his victims.
