Five more local level government elections declared failed in PNG

Papua New Guinea's Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen has declared five more failed local level government elections in the Highlands.

Four of the failed elections were declared in wards of Hela province, and one in neighbouring Southern Highlands.

It brings the total number of local level government declared failed for 2013 in the Highlands to 24.

Mr Trawen says the reason for failing the five polls include hijacking of ballot boxes and ballot papers, illegal signing of ballot papers by candidates supporters, kidnapping of electoral and security officials, destruction of ballot boxes and ballot papers and violence resulting in deaths.
