A team of the French Law Commission will today begin a week-long visit to New Caledonia to help the territory prepare for a possible independence referendum after 2014.
The delegation is led by the Commission's president, Jean-Jacques Urvoas.
It is tasked with reviewing the territory's situation ahead of next year's election of a new Congress, which is to determine with a 60 percent majority when a self-determination referendum should be held.
The 1998 Noumea Accord on greater autonomy provides for such a plebiscite for long-term residents.
