Sport: Marshall Islands athlete in race to slim down

10:27 am on 6 September 2013

A Marshall Islands athlete is in a race to slim down before the taekwondo competition gets underway at the Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna.

The Marshalls have three athletes competing in the French Territory, with weightlifter Mathlynn Sasser winning three silver medals in the women's 58kg division earlier this week.

Their final competitor, Jason Sam, has just arrived in Wallis ahead of his first taekwondo match on Monday.

The Chef de Mission for Team Marshall Islands, Kenny Sasser, says at the moment he's too heavy to compete in his weight clash but is confident the Wallisian heat will do the trick.

"Tomorrow we begin our training. He's 2kg over so we need to make him lose weight, starting tomorrow."

In other Mini Games news the athletics and Va'a programs finish up in Wallis today.

Rugby sevens joins taekwondo on the program next week, with beach volleyball now into day two in Futuna.
