10:41 am on 3 July 2013

Tonga's state owned telecoms operator, Tonga Communications Corporation, has announced a profit and paid the government a dividend - the first since 2010.

TCC made a net profit of 915 thousand US dollars and paid a dividend of 224 thousand US dollars to the government.

This compares with a loss the previous year of more than one point four million.

The board chairperson, Aloma Johansson, says despite the adverse economic climate the company has shown resilience.

She says it continues to be innovative in order to sustain and improve profitability.

Ms Johansson says this includes the funding for the submarine fibre optic cable and the setting up of a new public enterprise, Tonga Cable Ltd.
