Vanuatu opposition to push ahead with no confidence motion

2:11 pm on 8 July 2013

Vanuatu's Opposition leader says he has the numbers to pass a motion of no confidence in the government and it's what the electorate wants.

Ham Lini says the people have called for the motion because the current government, led by Moana Carcasses Kalosil, is not giving the people what they want.

He says the opposition has 27 signatures, which is enough to pass the motion, but they are awaiting a court decision on a Port Vila constituency dispute before deciding whether to proceed with it.

Mr Lini says the issue can not wait until the next elections.

"By that time a lot of things will have gone wrong. At the moment, government spending is too much, a change of government will help to control our finance."

The government spokesperson, Ralph Regenvanu, says the government is solid and the motion will never go through because the majority is with the government.
