Fiji union calls for through investigation into mill worker's death

9:03 am on 1 August 2013

The Fiji Sugar and General Worker's Union is calling for a thorough investigation into an industrial accident at the Lautoka Mill that lead to a worker's death.

Samuela Sigatokacake suffered burns to 60 per cent of his body when part of a vessel containing hot liquid collapsed.

The union alleges that the equipment was unsafe and poorly maintained, with inoperable release valves and cracks in welding being patched up, rather than reported to the Ministry of Labour inspectors.

It also believes the vessel was not certified for operations.

The union wants a proper Health and Safety audit of all mills and for health and safety laws to be enforced to avoid any future accidents.

It is also calling for a police investigation into criminal negligence on the part of Fiji Sugar Corporation Management.
