Women's group in PNG says more government support needed

A women's group in Papua New Guinea says they have achieved a lot with very little funds but now is the time for the government to help.

Susan Setae, the Executive Officer of Papua Hahine Social Action Group, says she credits the hard work her group does for the fact there are now three women in Parliament.

The group runs awareness programmes with many unpaid volunteers and Ms Setae says she is grateful to NGOs like Oxfam as well as AusAid for their electoral support programme.

Oxfam says in last year's record budget, the government allocated its smallest allocation to women's issues.

Susan Setae says a main focus for the group is tackling gender-based violence and she is lobbying the government to give more aid to help solve the problem.

"We don't get Government support, even though we get invited to a lot of their meetings to talk about what we do, but there is actually no real support they gave to us."
