PNG police ponder charges against funeral home

The police in Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea are considering what legal action they can take against the management of a funeral home allegedly found to be burning bodies in an open pit.

The Dove Funeral Home was cremating unclaimed bodies left in the Port Moresby General Hospital's morgue.

The NCD Central Commander, Jim Andrews, says they have a complainant and are waiting on legal clearance before they consider any arrests.

In a statement, the funeral home has said the unclaimed bodies were cremated after Christian rites were administered, and not in the manner that has been reported in the local media.

The general manager, Kevin Bender, says Dove respects PNG cultures and beliefs, including Christian values and does not carry out procedures in a reckless and careless manner
