A master carver, Sven Ortquist, whose work adorns churches, public buildings, businesses and homes in Samoa and American Samoa, died at the weekend in Seattle.

Mr Ortquist, who was on the staff of the American Samoa Community college, taught young people and adults the art of carving.

One of Mr Ortquist's most famous pieces is at the Holy Family Cathedral at Fatuoaiga.

He and his son Jude carved the altar, statues and stations of the cross inside the cathedral, the tapa designs which decorate the columns of the cathedral and the nativity fale outside.
