Tahiti election campaign near end

8:42 pm on 1 May 2013

Campaigning is nearing its end in French Polynesia for this weekend's second round of the territorial election.

The Tahoeraa Huiraatira of Gaston Flosse dominated the first round which was marked by an unsually high number of abstentions.

Walter Zweifel reports.

"The Union For Democracy and A Tia Porinetia both still hope to come first as the winner automatically gets a third of all seats as a bonus. The rhetoric has sharpened, with the Tahoeraa saying people aren't suffering from amnesia because they have now sanctioned the incompetence of the last nine years. After defeating the Tahoeraa twice in nine years, the Union For Democracy has invoked the gospel, urging voters to repel the devil. There are no opinion polls, but Gaston Flosse is poised to retake the presidency despite having accumulated the highest number of corruption convictions of any politician under French watch."
