Opposition wants PNG government to act fast on death penalty

Papua New Guinea's Attorney General and Justice Minister says the opposition has backed the government's plans to implement the death penalty and want them to act quickly.

Kerenga Kua says the government is simply responding to the public's desire for stronger deterrents following a series of violent crimes against women and sorcery-related killings.

The death penalty is already provided for in law but has not been used for over five decades.

Mr Kua says part of the reason is that death by hanging is the subscribed method and they want to look at more humane ways.

He says once that happens they would need to amend the criminal code act, which he expects the opposition will back in parliament.

"They've come out supporting, calling for the immediate implementation they are saying 'listen stop wasting time go ahead and do it, if it's hanging that is required then do the hanging', it seems to be a bipartisan approach."

Kerenga Kua says his department is working through technical issues right now.
