Samoa has opened its new Fiaga Diesel Power Plant on the hills of Aleisa.

The 39 million US dollars plant is intended to meet the entire power needs of the main island, Upolu, up to the year 2020.

The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi switched on the plant's first of four generators, each capable of producing 5.78 mega watt of power.

The other three generators will be brought online when installation work now underway is completed.

Three existing generators will later be transferred from the Tanugamanono power house to the new plant.
