Two more boys arrested over PNG gang-rape

1:48 pm on 24 April 2013

An eight-year old and a 14-year-old have been arrested in Papua New Guinea in relation to the gang rape of an US academic in Madang province.

A police spokesperson, Dominic Kakas, says yesterday's arrest of the two boys follows the capture of four other juveniles over the weekend.

Mr Kakas says the woman was attacked by a group of nine armed youths after her husband and a guide were tied up while on a jungle trail on Karkar Island.

He says a large Police team is combing the island for three suspects still on the run.

"It should only be a matter of time before we catch them all. The village leaders and board councillors from the villages on the island, they've been helping police with their investigation and that's how we've been able to round up those suspects and we have the names of all those involved in the incident."

The incident came to light after the woman spoke to media in the hope of raising awareness about rampant violence against women in PNG.
