Arrests made in PNG gang-rape case

Police in Papua New Guinea have arrested four men over the gang-rape of a American academic, and officials in Madang Province are urging locals to help find five suspects who are still on the run.

The woman was raped by an armed mob last week after her husband and a guide were tied up while on a jungle trail on Karkar Island.

She spoke to media about her ordeal before she returned to the US in the hope of raising awareness about rampant violence against women in PNG.

The incident came barely a week after an Australian was killed and his friend sexually assaulted by a group in the Western Highlands that led to the Prime Minister Peter O'Neill labelling the attack as the cowardly act of animals.

The newspaper, The National, reports that two men are being questioned over the incident, but up to eight of the attackers are still at large.
