Voting underway in French Polynesia's territorial election

1:33 pm on 22 April 2013

Voting is underway in French Polynesia in the first round of the territorial election to choose a 57-member assembly.

Official figures show turn-out at midday was almost 35 percent, which is nearly two percent higher than in the last election five years ago.

Four of the nine lists contesting today's poll have lodged a complaint, challenging the legality of the voting papers for the Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party.

The Tahoeraa says the reference to faith has been approved by the commission controlling electoral propaganda.

The complaint cannot be heard until after the election.

Voting will end at 7pm local time, with preliminary results expected shortly afterwards.
