Solomons to adopt Fiji voter registration system

1:36 pm on 12 April 2013

Solomon Islands will adopt Fiji's voter registration system for its national parliamentary elections next year.

The Home Affairs Minister, Manasseh Maelanga, revealed this in Parliament this week when he presented a bill to amend the country's electoral provisions.

Mr Maelanga says the Electoral Commission has highly recommended Fiji's recent voter registration programme as simple, appropriate and affordable.

Mr Maelanga says the Commission and his Ministry have been seeking ways to improve the process.

He says, since independence the voter registration process has been problematic.

Mr Maelanga says for next year's poll they want a voter register that is reliable and clean of double registration.

He says in the 2010 Parliamentary elections, the eligible voting population on the voter roll was larger than the actual population.
