Sport: East Asia Pacific cricketers eye up breakthrough

10:17 am on 22 December 2012

After a breakthrough year the East Asia Pacific cricketers are hoping to go the whole way in 2013.

The team, which is comprised of players from Vanuatu, Samoa and Papua New Guinea, finished fourth at January's Australian Country Cricket Championships, winning a team-best three matches.

The EAP Regional Development Officer, Tom Evans, coached the team at that tournament and says they're close to overcoming that final hurdle.

"If it wasn't for the last two one day games, where we played reasonably poorly, we were right in the mix to win it. So I guess at the end of the tournament last year we spoke as a group, knowing that the group would be a similar bunch this year, that we've got the ability levels there to win it, we just need be a little bit more consistent with our performance throughout the whole two weeks to beat all sides and take away the championship."

The EAP squad flies into Australia next week and will spend a couple of days training in Brisbane before heading to Bundaberg.
