Niue works to improve disaster readiness

The head of the Disaster Management Council in Niue says it is to meet with all village councils to ensure they are fully briefed on village disaster plans.

The Disaster Management council is awaiting the results of a village by-election in the weekend before it can call the meeting.

Its head, Richard Hipa, says as it is now cyclone season, it's critical that the village councils are brought up to speed on disaster plans before the festive season begins.

"The Disaster Council through the police will work together with the village councils and it is our responsibility to ensure that we work with the village councils, firstly to update all the village disaster plans and also the role of the village council and the role of the Disaster Council."

Richard Hipa says this will include briefings on cyclone warnings and keeping them up to date on the drought situation which has left the island on a high fire alert for months.
