Polling stations in American Samoa open for local elections

6:27 am on 7 November 2012

Ballot boxes left the American Samoa election office early this morning under police escort for more than 40 polling places on the territory's main island of Tutuila.

The polls open from 6am to 6pm.

The territory is electing a Governor and Lieutinent Governor, a delegate to Congress, 20 of the 21 members of the American Samoa House of Representatives and a change to the constitution to give the territorial legislature the power to override the governor's veto authority.

The rain, thunder and lightning which pummeled the territory yesterday has stopped which comes as a big relief to candidates worried that the bad weather will keep voters away from the polls.

Chief Election Officer Soliai Tuipine was thankful for the break in the weather.

"I prayed to God to give us a good day for the elections so that every qualified voters have their rights to vote."

Voting in the outer islands of Manu'a should be over by noon as very few voters still reside on the islands, however media is barred from announcing the results until after polls close at 6pm.

There's a ban on the sale of alcohol until after the polls close.
